Am I fit? Let’s see: I run eight to nine miles a day, lift weights for an hour and practice kickboxing on a regular basis. So yes, I consider myself fit.

But am I healthy? Well, no. Not exactly.

Surprised? You should be, since I keep preaching the benefits of a healthy lifestyle as the editor of this magazine. Like most people out there, I have a way to go before achieving true health. It’s one thing to be able to run 13 miles in 90 minutes. Something entirely different is attaining balance and peace in your everyday life. But the latter part is what defines someone who leads a healthy existence: the ability to find moderation in all of life’s pursuits. I’m an all-or-nothing kind of person, which means I tend to push myself harder in every aspect of my life (work, exercise, diet, family), regardless of whether I feel tired. That means I’m not listening to my body the way I should.
 
I take pride in having a competitive streak that drives me to beat my personal best every day, but I’m also aware of a basic fact: Everyone needs an off-season. That’s why this issue aims to find the key to improving ourselves from the inside out, seeking that balance between health and fitness that really defines the standards of living well. It’s a noble, worthy goal to look forward to, regardless of career, gender or age. Speaking of which, you’ll also reap the benefits of aging gracefully and living a longer, fuller life.

And what better way to start things off than by taking a cue from the six finalists of SOBeFiT’s Fittest Person of the Year 2009 Contest? On September 2, 2009, vote for your favorites (one male and one female). Join us in declaring the winners who will share their gift of healthy living with the rest of us!
